College Town USA

Here's a recent cover and feature commission for the University of Maryland Medicine Bulletin to showcase the exciting new developments at their urban campus in Baltimore. The digitally collaged illustrations feature a mix of medical students, Baltimore landmarks and new campus architecture rendered in a bright palette. This job was a joy to work on and went super smoothly due to great art direction by Jim Gray who supplied me with an extensive array of really useful references and assets to go to (collage) town with as it were. You can see these on the main site here also.

Future Home

Here are a couple of recent editorial illustrations for Good Housekeeping on the subject of the Home of the Future. With a quick turn-around I created these digital collages featuring numerous elements mentioned in the article from domesticated robots and auto-bins to smart eco-homes and hemp bricks. You can see another fun tech-based commission for Good Housekeeping here.

Crablington House

I had so much fun last year creating Lido Crab for Margate's Crab Museum calendar 2023 that I couldn't resist submitting another local landmark/crab inspired artwork for the '24 edition. As I'd been developing some illustrations this year featuring the monolithic br-eauty Arlington House it seemed to be the ideal candidate for crab-ification. Working with a Cinema 4d model I'd already made of the building I added concrete pincers and legs along with some rooftop eyes before composting into a Margate Main Sands scene in Photoshop. Happy to say Crablington House was selected for the calendar along with some lovely entries and is available at the Crab Museum store here. Get your claws on one.

Toronto Time

This is a commission that's been on the shelf for a while. It was originally created in 2019 for a TD Bank event in Toronto which was hastily cancelled in 2020 by a certain global pandemic and rescheduled for '22 I believe. The brief was to illustrate the city's landmarks and activities in an exciting way so I (virtually) went to town with this dynamically composed collage featuring the CN Tower and the pretty cool looking Royal Ontario Museum. Would sure like to visit the city in person one day.

SALC Decarbonisation Project

Over the Summer I was commissioned by Lancaster City Council to create an animated video to showcase the work being done at Salt Ayre Leisure Centre (SALC) for their extensive Decarbonisation Project. The brief was to create a stylised 3d representation of the leisure centre and surrounding area with a dynamic and clear overview of the project aims and phases. Modelling the leisure centre in Cinema 4d proved to be the main technical challenge for me, as the building is quite a complicated set of architectural shapes, but I was pleased with the result after more than a few puzzling moments. Once the centre and other elements were constructed I worked with the client to put the script together, develop the visual style and storyboard the action. Once that was all approved the 3d camera moves were set up in Cinema 4d before rendering and compositing it all together in After Effects. Finally, the voiceover was commissioned and the music chosen to wrap up a satisfying and relatively smooth job overall...huzzah!

Groundworking

Full Video Highlights Reel
Here's a recent 3d animation commission for Sinclair Studio that kept me busy during the first few weeks of the year, an explainer video on 'Understanding Groundworks' for RM Construction & Development. The animation essentially had to show the complicated process of how foundations and basements are created for pre-fabricated houses in a stylised and accessible way. This meant wrapping my impractical mindset around the highly practical field of groundworks. The clear script and process storyboard by Sinclair Studio proved invaluable in getting my understanding kickstarted. Initially, I set about developing 3d environments and construction vehicles in Cinema 4d with RM's branding colours to set the visual tone while the technical details of the script/boards were hammered out. Each scene brought new challenges whilst being constructed in Cinema 4d, such as placing pipes and utilities correctly in the foundation dig, getting a good concrete pour, destroying a barn effectively and putting cameras in the right areas to capture it all. Ultimately it all stretched and elevated my 3d skills in a satisfying and rewarding way and hopefully the final video helps folks get to grips with those tricky ol' groundworks. I've posted the final 5 minute explainer video and a 1 minute highlight reel for the time impoverished plus some screenshots and 3d development imagery. You can see similar work for Sinclair Studio and Solivus here.

Future London

Here's an enjoyable commission for the Evening Standard's Future London supplement on how we might be travelling around in 2030. Being an adopted Londoner the transport and city centric brief was literally right up my street so I 'went to town' creating five colourful collages for the various layouts. It was great fun to interpret the various vehicles with a slightly futuristic spin and collage some of my favourite local architecture into the mix.

Figures And Football

Here's a bit of a catch-up on a couple of sporty commissions for Qatar Airways Oryx magazine I've worked on in the past year. The most recent 'Perfect Figures' looks at the trend of collecting health data through smartphones and wearables and the second 'Countdown To Kick-Off' is a look a the stadium and infrastructure construction underway in Qatar for the 2022 World Cup.  You can see them on the site with related work here.

London's Greatest Buildings

I was recently asked by RIBA to adapt my London skyline illustration to promote an upcoming event called London's Greatest Buildings on 24th June, part of the London Architecture Festival. I was very happy to do so, always a pleasure working on architectural imagery.
