Axles To Grind

Here are two editorials for a spread on heavy truck safety in Car and Driver magazine in the U.S. The brief was to create an illustrated take on a recent horrifying incident in New York state involving an out-of-control truck, a jam of vehicles and a bunch of heroic individuals. It can be watched here if you wish, thankfully there were no fatalities. You can see the work on the site here with other Car And Driver commissions.

In The Future

Here's a new future-themed cityscape cover illustration for HGI Magazine showing the fast paced change of the industrial and investment landscape. Some cool driverless cars in there too! You can see it on the site here with related work to check out.

Computer Brain

I have brains on the brain today with yet another illustration depicting the ol' grey matter in technicolour. It's the latest BBC Focus cover looking at How Technology Is Rewiring Your Brain, yes, yours. There's also an iPad cover animation to go with this one. See all the Focus related work on my site here.

Defeating Dementia

Here's a recent illustration for Nature Journal on How To Defeat Dementia. It was a tricky brief as the article focused on three courses of action in particular and the image needed to represent those along with dementia in a sensitive way. I came up with this damaged, maze-like brain illustration using a more graphic approach than usual and I'm pleased with the outcome. You can see my other work for Nature on the main site here.

Here's a recent cover illustration and iPad animation for BBC Focus magazine on the theme of Genetic Superheroes, those unsuspecting folks with super DNA that may hold the key to ending disease. See more Focus work on the site here.

Found Wanting

Here's a new cover illustration for the upcoming single from First Congress called Found Wanting. The illustration was inspired by imagery of Ancient Egyptian gods and weighing scales, supplied by band leader Tom Van Can, and evolved into a kid Anubis on a see saw. Go figure. Click the links to see more artwork for First Congress' other singles Good Problem and The First.

Logistically Speaking

Here's a cover illustration for the Mercedes-Benz innovation magazine Next. It's a look at the next phase of intelligent logistics where products essentially navigate their own way to the recipient as delivery vehicles communicate with each other. Postman Pat would love it. You can also see the work on the site here.

Sur

Here's some personal work that's been gestating in the quiet gaps for a while now. They're two serene, vaguely post-apocalyptic, sci-fi scenes inspired by some Californian photography I took in LA and beautiful Big Sur. I'll let the illustrations do the rest.

Infinity Plus One

I recently took on a fun commission to create the artwork for American family hip hop artist Secret Agent 23 Skidoo's new album, Infinity Plus One. Working with the artist Cactus Skidoo the brief was to create illustrations that reflected the 'intergalactic space funk' of the music and a child-like wonder for the cosmos. The artwork is primarily for the packaging with the CD design itself based on the Voyager Golden Record launched into space on the classic '77 mission. The packaging also features glow-in-the-dark elements on the front and back. You can see the artwork on the main site here.

Update - The album went on to win the Grammy for 'Best Children's Album this year. Congrats to Cactus!

Spaceman and the Nanobots

Here are two new BBC Focus covers and iPad edition animations to cast the eyeballs over. Most recently is a lone lunar astronaut illustration for a Q+A Space Special issue and before that a cover on Nano Medics beavering away inside the human body. You can see more cover work for BBC Focus on the site here.

Good Problem

Here's a new illustration and design for the latest single 'Good Problem' from  the band First Congress. It's a song about a relationship that survives against the odds so I crafted this piece by splicing a reluctantly enamoured cat and dog with an interesting still I chanced across from thirties movie Now And Forever. You can listen to the song on their site here and see further artwork and animation for First Congress on my site here.

Up At The O2

Earlier in the year I worked with Feed Films on a briefing video for London's Up At The O2 attraction, a walking trek up and over the former Millennium Dome in North Greenwich. I designed and animated the intro and outro in After Effects with some quality 3d work from Radio Design. We also created and animated infographics sequences that were tracked into video segments to enhance the overall message, some of which are shown in the edit here. You can also see this and other video work on the main site here.

3 x 3 Professional Show 2016

Pleased to pick up a Merit and an Honourable Mention in this year's 3 x 3 Professional Show for two of my illustrations for BBC Focus magazine. My Einstein cover for the Relativity On Trial issue scored a Merit in the Editorial category and my futuristic vision of a Termite City for the Into The Future column earned the Honourable Mention in the sci-fi category.

Pluripotency

I love it when Nature calls(!) as it usually ends in a rewarding commission and this time was no different. I tackled this week's cover and feature illustration on ten years of iPS (Induced Pluripotent Stem) cell research. Most of the cell imagery itself was fascinating and colourful so I created an eye design out of iPS cells for the cover to suggest observation under a microscope. The feature required a portrait of Nobel Prize winning stem cell researcher Shinya Yamanaka in the same style. You can also see the work on the site here along with further Nature commissions here.

Platinum List

American Airlines' Celebrated Living magazine got in touch again recently to commission some illustrations for a feature called 'Platinum List' covering at all the latest luxury products and experiences on offer. The first illustration looks at the latest in hotel AI technology and robot service and the second focuses on some of the obscene luxuries available to the super-rich on cruises. I also provided a couple of spot illustrations, one about the Red Rooster restaurants dual homes in Harlem and Shoreditch. You can also see them and other work for Celebrated Living on the site here.

Secret 7"

It was a pleasure and privilege to be part of the Secret 7" exhibition this year at Sonos Studios, London in aid of Amnesty International UK. My 7" record sleeve design was on show throughout April alongside some fantastic entries and was sold in a buying frenzy for charity yesterday. So, now that the secret's out here's my Superman flavoured illustration for Tame Impala's The Less I Know The Better. I've also posted here  my other two submissions that didn't make the show for Max Richter's Dream 3 and John Lennon's Imagine. See the work on the site here.
